Hartford Creative Contest

The Hartford Creative Contest is Open to all Hartford students (grades 4 through 12) attending school inside or outside Hartford, as well as suburban children attending Hartford schools.

THIS YEAR'S TOPICS: Students may respond to either of the following 2 prompts using poetry, art, or written essays:

What would make my neighborhood or school better? The student will be expected to share his/her unique perspective on his/her neighborhood

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSIONS:

  1. All submissions must be the author’s original work and not previously published. All submitted entries become the property of the Hartford Creative Contest and each applicant specifically authorizes the publication and reproduction of his/her work by the Hartford Creative Contest organization.
  2. Essays must be typed on standard 8 ½ x 11 paper, and must be a minimum of 400 words, and a maximum of 1,200 words.
  3. Poetry must be typed on standard 8 ½ x 11 paper, and shall not exceed 2 typed pages with double spacing and size 12 font.
  4. Visual Art must be presented on paper or canvas and must not exceed 18” x 24”. All art must be accompanied by a 100 to 250 word essay relating the work to the chosen topic above.
  5. EVERY ENTRY MUST INCLUDE the child’s name, age, grade, school, address and phone number, along with the teacher name & phone number.

JUDGING CRITERIA: All submissions will be judged on creativity, originality, and content

PRIZES:

Prizes are awarded by grade, with a monetary award for the 1st , 2nd and 3rd place winner for each of the eligible grades as well as a Grand Prize of $500.00.

AWARD CEREMONY:

All prizes will be awarded at the Award Supper and Ceremony on Saturday, May 2, 2020 at Asylum Hill Congregational Church, 814 Asylum Avenue, Hartford, CT, from 5 – 9. All attendees will have the opportunity to read their essay or talk about their submission that evening.

Essay Topics & Guidelines

Accepted submissions can be in the form of an Essay,Poem, or Art Piece. All entries must relate directly to one of the above topics and follow these guidelines:

Essays: Must be TYPED on standard 8.5 X 11" paper

Poetry: Must be TYPED on standard 8.5 X 11" paper

Visual Art: Must be on paper or canvas no larger than 18 X 24" ALL ARTWORK must be accompanied by a 100-250 word essay relating the work to the topic chosen

ALL SUBMISSIONS MUST BE ENTRANT'S ORIGINAL WORK, NOT PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED

Judging & Awards

All work will be evaluated based on content, creativity and originality. Entries in each category of Essays, Poetry and Art will be divided into 3 grade-based sub-categories: grades 4 - 6, 7 - 9, and 10 - 12.

There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards given in each category.

Award Ceremony

The Award Ceremony will be held on - Saturday, May 2, 2020 at Asylum Hill Congregational Church, 814 Asylum Ave., Hartford, CT.Ceremony is open to all entrants, not just winners.
